Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with extensive world-building, a wide array of personalities, and a thrilling plot featuring angels, evil spirits, and dark forces expanding in strength within the city.

Warning: Spoilers for the third episode of the new season are included.

The Warrior Group Revealed

The latest chapter ended with a dramatic pause and presented the premier party of adventurers who will branch out from the central cast to begin their separate journey, distinct from the additional parties.

The combat-focused team includes Teor Pridesire (portrayed by the voice actor), the agile character (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (the cast member), the cleric (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

Considering an extensive roster, it was evident from the outset that having everyone at one table would be impossible.

That’s why, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Overture, intertwining the personal journeys before splitting into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Planners, and Explorers.

Characteristics of the Soldiers Table

As described by Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Soldiers table is for participants who prefer a classically intense fight-heavy gameplay experience where diplomatic options are few and far between.

Upon first impression, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander might appear unsuited, but the actions of the latest installment show why these five characters are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

For one thing, the group knows exactly where to go next after a violent opening clash with the antagonists.

A former ally of Thjazi Fang—whose passing initiated the campaign’s events—used the enemy for his personal gain, invading the secret base, attacking the rogue, and taking all the powerful objects to sell off.

The antagonist then cleared his debts and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, north of the city, with Cyd close behind.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each character has a personal reason to exit Dol-Makjar:

  • The rogue, as the close ally and best friend, desires revenge.
  • Kattigan knows Timmony and cautions that it is a dangerous location.
  • The strong character and The healer, having defied his family’s wishes to eliminate the fighter and instead freed him, have no other options.
  • But, their status as important members in House Halovar could assist the team reach locations they usually can’t.
  • Additionally, The grateful character swore a life debt to The cleric for his deliverance and will now follow him anywhere.

Fugitives

In addition, all of them are wanted by the authorities that govern the city for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind too risky:

  • The agile adventurer and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The strong figure and Wicander turned against the influential house and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
  • The target is wanted dead by the family.

This results in them little choice but to travel to the remote area in search of the antagonist.

Future Episodes

From the latest episode’s Cooldown, we learn that the warrior group will not appear the following episode, leaving the other eight players to round up the Explorers and Schemers groups.

Fans can expect finding out which adventurers will be in which group in the season’s last Overture episode, released on the upcoming Thursday.
